Atlanta Beat Schedule Update

We’ve know for a while what the opening day would be for most WPS clubs.  With the new KSU Soccer Stadium still in early stages of construction the Beat were one team that wasn’t ready to set that date…until now.  Sunday, May 9th at 6PM at KSU Stadium the Beat will face off against defending WPS champions, Sky Blue FC. The game will also be televised nationally on Fox Soccer Channel.

Shawn McGee had this to say

“The opening of the world’s first women’s soccer-specific stadium of this magnitude means a great deal to both soccer in the Southeast and to women’s sports on a national scale.”

The Beat plays Philadelphia Independence in their opening game of the season as the two expansion teams face off on Sunday, April 11th at John A. Farrell Stadium. The full schedule will be released in early February.

In the second year of existencethe WPS is expanding the number of games from 20 to 24 and will move the All Star game to the middle of the season instead of at the end of the season like last year.  With the Men’s World Cup going on this will allow a break in the action during a time when many soccer fans will be glued to their TV’s.  It will also coincide with the one year countdown until the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany.  Could we see WPS All-Stars vs German National team? Or maybe USA vs International game?

WPS has also confirmed that the playoff format will continue as it did last year. At the end of the regular season the first place team receives a bye until the final game. The  winner of the first game played by the third and fourth place team play the second place team. The winner of that game plays for the championship against the first place team.

Would you rather the win 1st place in the regular season and not play for 2 weeks or continue to play? How excited are you about the new stadium?
