After finally scoring his first goal of the season [...]]]> The Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves claimed sole possession of first place in the NPSL Southeast Division with a 3-1 victory over the Knoxville Force on Saturday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

Atlanta forward Tornubari Nyonebue scored two first-half goals, with the second being the eventual game-winner. After finally scoring his first goal of the season last weekend in a 2-1 victory at Rocket City United, Nyonebue’s two goals last night make him the Silverbacks Reserves’ leading scorer on the season.

Early goals have been the norm for Atlanta this season, with the Silverbacks Reserves usually conceding them. Saturday night, however, the opposite was the case. Nyonebue opened his account in the 5th minute, as he dribbled across the top of the box and found space between a multitude of defenders and slotted a low shot past Knoxville goalkeeper Conor Hurley.

The Force answered back in the 16th minute. Theo Yang received the ball at the top of the box with his back to the Atlanta goal. The Knoxville forward turned and unleashed a beautifully-placed right-footed shot that curled into the top corner and gave Silverbacks Reserves keeper Dave Martin no chance.

Atlanta would grab the lead just 12 minutes later as a Nyonebue pounced on a rebound and gave the Silverbacks Reserves a 2-1 halftime lead. Daniel Taylor shot from the right and the ball could not be controlled by Hurley. Nyonebue was there to clean up the mess for his second goal of the game and third of the season.

Atlanta continued to dominate for much of the second half as Martin was rarely called into duty. Silverbacks Reserves coach Ricardo Montoya’s introduction of Alaghi Toure led to more great chances, and Hurley’s goal fell once again in the 73rd minute as Toure scored his first of the season for Atlanta.

The win moves the Silverbacks Reserves into first place with 11 points from six games played, one point ahead of Chattanooga F.C. who have played one less game.

Chattanooga hosts Rocket City United next Saturday before Atlanta visits on June 25 in a game that will go a long way in deciding the winner of the NPSL Southeast Division.

Chris Ochieng finally broke the deadlock in the 116th minute. Chattanooga lofted a free kick into the Atlanta box and the ball fell softly to Ochieng, who had time to control the ball and put it past Silverbacks Reserves goalkeeper Eric Ati.

The teams had been evenly matched throughout the game, with chances coming on both ends. Most notably for Atlanta was a shot in the 20th minute by Tornubari Nyonebue. The Atlanta striker hit a right-footed shot that deflected off the back of a Chattanooga defender, stranding goalkeeper Thomas Hunter. Fortunately for the Tennessee side, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and fell to safety.

In the 33rd minute, Silverbacks Reserves forward Nick Burton drove in on the left side of the box and forced Hunter into another great save. Throughout the game Atlanta peppered the Chattanooga goal but Hunter came up big each time. He was credited with six saves for the game.

Each team found itself with a great chance to win the game at regulation. First, Atlanta’s Alejandro Duque forced Hunter into a great save on a free kick from just outside the box. On the other end, Luke Winter had a free kick from nearly the same distance but put his shot over the bar.

As the teams headed to extra time, Silverbacks Reserves Head Coach Ricardo Montoya was ejected, leaving him to watch the remainder of the game from the press box.

In the first 15-minute extra period, Atlanta continued to dominate possession but could not put anything on goal. Towards the end of the period, Atlanta defender and captain Ramiro Canovas, the only player on the Silverbacks Reserves’ roster with U.S. Open Cup experience, had to be subbed out. In his place came Fabian Irigoyen and Atlanta would miss Canovas’ height and experience dearly.

The goal by Ochieng in the 116th minute sent the home supporters into a frenzy and Chattanooga held on to claim their first berth in the U.S. Open Cup as the representative of the NPSL Southeast Division.

A few quick notes before we get the lineups: Juan Roblez got the start for Chattanooga in goal last night. In his first game of the season he collided with defender Andrew Stewart in the second half. Roblez left injured and did not return and will be unavailable for tonight’s match.

Since joining the NPSL, Chattanooga F.C. has lost only once to another NPSL team. That loss came in the team’s opening season of 2009 when they fell 3-1 at Finley Stadium to Atlanta F.C., now known as the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves.

Atlanta will be looking to qualify for their second U.S. Open Cup. Its first berth came in 2009 where they entered in the first round and lost to the Charleston Battery 2-0.

24h minute: First corner kick for Atlanta after some great work from Nyonebue. Duque sends the corner in, Canovas nearly gets a head on it. Ball bounces out, Nandi and Kevin Rodriguez each put crosses back in to no danger.

81st minute: A couple of changes for Chattanooga in the midfield have helped them string some passes together. Good tackling by the Atlanta backline have kept them from getting any shots on Ati’s goal. We continue 0-0.

85th minute: Awaiting a free kick for Atlanta from just outside the box. Controversial foul call as Duque was taken down. Dangerously close to a penalty kick. Canovas off after clashing heads with a Chattanooga defender, has not been subbed off but went back to the locker room area to receive treatment.

87th minute: FANTASTIC SAVE by Thomas Hunter off Alejandro Duque’s free kick. Canovas is back on the field with a massive bandage wrapped on his head.

88th minute: Corner kick for Chattanooga goes all the way through the box. Dangerous but Atlanta survives. Hunter’s save has woken the crowd up. Atlanta needs to at least hang on to take this to extra time.

2nd half stoppage time: 5 minutes. Corner kick for Chattanooga, taken by Drummond, volleyed on goal by Winter and saved easily by Ati. DANGEROUS FREE KICK outside the box for Chattanooga. Canovas was struggling with Drummond on a ball over the top, Drummond goes down, Canovas gets the card. We’re nearing the end of stoppage time. Free kick by Winter goes OVER THE BAR. In the first semifinal of the NPSL Southeast Division qualifying tournament, Atlanta found themselves behind once again, as has been the case in all four of [...]]]> CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Coming from behind once again, the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves moved within 90 minutes of returning to the U.S. Open Cup, defeating Jacksonville United F.C. 3-1.

In the first semifinal of the NPSL Southeast Division qualifying tournament, Atlanta found themselves behind once again, as has been the case in all four of their league matches. Tyler Williams opened the scoring, finding himself unmarked on the right side in the 23rd minute. Silverbacks Reserves keeper Eric Ati came out to challenge the Jacksonville striker who coolly chipped his shot into the goal.

The lead would not last for long, however, as Juan Carlos Nandi found the back of the net in the 28th minute. Nandi’s right-footed shot hit Jacksonville goalkeeper Stuart McCrory in the hands but he could not keep it out and the game was level.

The game would remain tied for nearly an hour until a corner kick in the 86th minute. Nandi’s corner kick found Kingsley Morgan unmarked in the box. Morgan’s powerful header beat McCrory to his right to give Atlanta its first lead.

With Jacksonville pressing to tie the game and send it to extra-time, Alejandro Duque received a pass from Tornubari Nyonebue and beat McCrory low to his left to seal the game in second-half stoppage time.

This was the second 3-1 victory for the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves over Jacksonville United F.C., with the first coming in NPSL league play on May 14 in Atlanta. In that game, the Silverbacks Reserves also fell behind early only to score three unanswered goals.

Saturday night’s victory advances Atlanta to Sunday night’s championship game where they will play either Chattanooga F.C. or Rocket City United with a spot in the U.S. Open Cup on the line.

21st minute: First corner kick of the match to Jacksonville. Headed out by Ramiro Canovas for another corner. A couple heads on it and it’s sent clear by Juan Carlos Nandi. Danger averted. Free kick from about 25 yards coming up for Atlanta.

23rd minute: GOAL Jacksonville United FC. Break out after the Atlanta free kick, ball was switched to the right flank, where forward was unmarked. Eric Ati came off his line to challenge and Tyler Williams chipped it over

28th minute: GOAL Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves. Juan Carlos Nandi with a shot from outside the box that goes through Stuart McCrory’s hands. Jacksonville keeper should have had that one easily but Atlanta will take it. Tied 1-1 now in the 31st minute.

35th minute: Free kick for Jacksonville from about 35 yards out. Played into the box but nobody gets a head on it, goes wide of Ati’s goal.

Halftime: We’re tied at a goal apiece between the Silverbacks Reserves and Jacksonville United. A little sloppy from Atlanta, but they’ve dominated possession and have had the bulk of the chances. A few times they’ve been caught out on the left side, one of those times leading to the Jacksonville goal. Should be an interesting second half as both teams have options up front on the bench. Look for Tornubari Nyonebue to come on for Atlanta and Leyimu to come on for Jacksonville. Also, bear in mind that Atlanta trailed 1-0 against Jacksonville back on May 14 and came back to win 3-1. I’ll be heading down to the field to take some pictures and will be offline for the first few minutes.

66th minute: Back at the desk, still 1-1. Only chance of note was a free kick from Alejandro Duque about 5 minutes ago that was saved comfortably by McCrory. In the meantime, both Leyimu and Nyonebue have come on for Jacksonville and Atlanta, respectively.

72nd minute: Nyonebue steals the ball in the box and only has the keeper to beat but fires his shot over. Need to put that one on net.

83rd minute: Still 1-1, Jacksonville with the better chances lately. Ati has made a save and punched clear in the last few minutes. Many changes for both sides and both teams trying to get a feel for themselves again.

85th minute: Nearly an own goal, as Atlanta crossed in from the right side and the Jacksonville defender volleyed it just over the goal.

Once again Atlanta falls behind to Jacksonville to score three unanswered to win. Goals from Nandi, Morgan and Duque put the Silverbacks Reserves into tomorrow night’s final where they will take on either Chattanooga F.C. or Rocket City United.

The Silverbacks Reserves will enter the tournament in the semifinals, [...]]]> Coming off two hard-fought games against the Georgia Revolution, the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves will look to qualify for this year’s U.S. Open Cup this weekend.

The qualifying tournament for the NPSL Southeast Division is being held this weekend at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Silverbacks Reserves will enter the tournament in the semifinals, where they will play Jacksonville United F.C. at 5:30 Saturday afternoon. The winner of this game will play the winner of Chattanooga F.C. and Rocket City United of Huntsville, Ala. on Sunday afternoon for a place in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup.

Jacksonville advanced to the semifinals courtesy of a 1-0 victory over the Knoxville Force on Friday afternoon. The win represents the Florida outfit’s first victory in any competition, as the new franchise has lost all four of their NPSL Southeast Division games. These four losses include a 3-1 setback on May 14 to the Silverbacks Reserves.

This past weekend, Atlanta suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 3-2 game at home to the Georgia Revolution. Two days later the two teams from the metro Atlanta area met again, this time resulting in a 1-1 draw at the RYSA Soccerplex in Conyers.

Atlanta will be looking to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup for the second time in franchise history. The team previously qualified for the 2009 Open Cup as Atlanta F.C., where they fell in the first round to the Charleston Battery 2-0.

The Georgia Revolution is not participating in this weekend’s tournament, with F.C. Tulsa taking their place. Tulsa played in the NPSL Southeast Division last year but is sitting out this season in order to prepare for a move to PDL in 2012.

The team’s 3-1 victory over Jacksonville United FC, coupled with Rocket City United’s 2-1 loss to the Knoxville Force, puts Atlanta in first place on goals scored.

Playing less than 24 hours after tying Chattanooga FC, the Silverbacks Reserves were stunned early. In the 2nd minute, Wale Leyimu cut in from the left flank across the top of the box and unleashed a low shot to the far post. Atlanta goalkeeper Eric Ati had no chance as the visitors took a shocking 1-0 lead.

Both teams managed to create a handful of chances in the first half, but the score remained 1-0 going into the locker room.

Despite the halftime deficit, Atlanta Head Coach Ricardo Montoya was more upbeat about his team’s first-half performance. “I think in the first half we played well. The only problem is we concede a goal so early and it changed everything.”

As was the case Friday night, everything changed for Atlanta in the second half. 12 minutes after the teams returned from the locker room, Silverbacks Reserves forward Tornubari Nyonebue turned past his mark in the box and unleashed a low shot. Jacksonville keeper Stuart McCrory did well to stretch and save the shot with his right hand, but the ball popped up in the air. Atlanta defender Kevin Rodriguez was there to tap in the rebound to tie the game.

Nyonebue would continue to torment the Jacksonville defense and eventually came up with the play that would change the game in Atlanta’s favor for good. In the 66th minute he ran onto a ball from Andrew Green and drove into the box. Nyonebue faked out McCrory who could do nothing but foul the Silverbacks Reserves’ forward. The play resulted in a penalty kick for Atlanta and a red card for McCrory. In stepped Parker Dixon, who could not stop the penalty kick from Juan Arbelaez.

Playing down a man for over 20 minutes, Dixon did admirably keeping out the third goal. That would change in stoppage time, as once again Nyonebue found Nick Burton unmarked in the box and the second-half substitute finished off the game with his first goal of the season.

After the game, Montoya cited his team’s work ethic despite having a shortened bench as one of the keys to the second-half turnaround. “What I like about this team is they never gave up. We were down, we were playing bad, and they never gave up,” Montoya said.

The win gives Atlanta four points, tied with Chattanooga FC at the top of the Southeast Division. Jacksonville United, on the other hand, dropped their second game in less than 24 hours. The Florida outfit lost 2-1 at the Georgia Revolution on Friday night. Jacksonville currently sits at the bottom of the Southeast Division with three losses in three games.

After competing Wednesday in the All-Star game several players from both teams laced up their boots again to face off on Saturday.  Just like the All-Star game Marta scored two against Atlanta Beat GK Hope Solo.  Down early (31st second) the comeback became near impossible when Kia McNeill was given a red card for sliding into keeper Barnhart studs up.  Tina Ellertson also failed to return for the second half from an early injury when Tiffeny Milbrett collided and Tina received an injury to her face.  The Beat play their next home game against the Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday, July 21^st which is also Faith and Family Night.  Post-game festivities will include the first ever concert at KSU Stadium.

The Silverbacks continued their winning ways with a victory over the last place Majectics.  The lady Silverbacks will have their last regular season home game this Saturday, July 10^th @ 7:30 PM.  They’ll take on the Charlotte Lady Eagles which is the only team to beat them this year.
